As at present the facility is going through a facelift. A new deer watching terrace and the second elephant theatre si under construction. Make sure to check if the Elephnat Show and the Sea Lion show is available on the day you visit.
Piece of advice, except for afew areas the walkways are generally open to the scorching sun, and therefore remember to carry a cap, extra water (although a few shops are located inside) and some sun protection with you.

A great place for a day out for a family. Plenty of entertainment if looked at positively and not negatively. The animals are in plenty but there are certain areas of care that need to be improved. The elephant dance in the evening is novel and very absorbing. There are plenty of eating places and one can take one's food along as there are plenty of eating locations. This is close to the capital so that you would not be moving out of the Colombo hotel vicinity

It is not far from main city, Colombo. Just a few kilometers.Comfortable public transport is available cheap. You can spend the whole day there. On Sundays, elephant dances are available at 5. 00 pm, local time. It is vast place with lots of open air spaces. A nominal entrance fee has to be paid. One of the best in Asia. A rich collection. Aquarium is lovely. It is a diversity of aqua-creatures. Lots of people come, especially on Sundays. So, if you are so inclined, it is a good opportunity to mix up with local people. If you ask for a night stay, expect a positive response! In the gardens, lots of fauna, too. feeding time of the animals, is a must. It is worth watching them being fed. The most poisonous snakes in the world can be viewed and observed at close range. Playing about by orang utangs, monkeys of many varieties of primates is a treat to the eye. Food, etc. can be purchased within the gardens. You may have a look at some lovely girls as well, if only you enjoy it! Of course, it so happened recently that an infant fell into the cage of leopard and the animal in no time gulped it! I would advice a company of 2 - 6 persons. A large group can be comfortable, too, if you are so inclined. Hotel/lodging facilities are not far away. Mount Lavinia, so popular among foreign tourists, is almost walking distance and here, you are at a lovely sea beach. Communication facilities like phone, internet, fax, etc. are available inside the zoo, outside the zoo and all around. In case of emergency, the best of medical facilities are available close by and in plenty. The staff at the zoo are friendly and courteous. Literature on various aspects of the zoo can be had, for a small price. This year, it is a boom period after defeating the terrorists who were terrorizing the country for nearly 30 years. So, large crowds of locals as well as foreign tourists are to be found at the zoo, so that for purchasing the entrance ticket, you have to follow a queue for quite some time. Just opposite the zoo, you find a large ground, where you can see youth playing mostly cricket at anytime of the day. Maybe, you can relax there for a while, watching them play. Of course, one has use one's common sense at all times. Heavy drinking inside the zoo is not advised, except perhaps a beer. Needless to say, thoughtful planning beforehand will doubtlessly make the visit more fruitful than otherwise.

Over 1.2 million visitors pass through the Zoo's gates every year for it caters to young and old alike and is a source of healthy recreation to the average citizen especially those who come in family groups. To all its visitors the Zoo is quiet tranquil haven into which they could withdraw from the bustle of urban life.

You would get a range of animals: snakes, butter flys, elepahants , lionst etc. Good to visit with kids or if you want to see the Sri Lankan Elipahns and if you are unable to visit the Pinnawala elepahnt orphanage then this is good since there is a Elephant dance around 3.00 pm. The animals are in enclosures so if you are against this may be not worth visiting.

Dehiwala Zoo is a zoological garden in Dehiwala, Sri Lanka, founded in 1936. Its sprawling areas are host to a variety of animals and birds. The zoo exhibits animals but also places an emphasis on animal conservation and welfare, and education.
Visions for the zoo include, "To create one of the world’s outstanding zoological institutions, that is a centre of the excellence for conservation, research and education" and mission is "Resourceful conservation of animals by means of a learning, achieved through the exhibition of species which were adopted with loving care". The zoo has 3000 animals and 350 species as of 2005. The annual revenue is 40 million rupees.
Zoological Gardens of Sri Lanka exchange its residents with other zoological gardens . The animal breeding program conducted by the zoo is compelling for this kind of activity.
