A nice place to spend the day ! The Natural History section is in a separate building. It gives the visitor a thorough understanding of our natural resources as well as an in depth look at our fauna and flora. If you really want to know what made Sri Lanka, don't miss this.

Sri Lanka is a beautiful island with it's rich culture. Over several thousand old many cultural items are available in many ruin cities in the country. This island called as "Rathnadeepa" in ancient times. Because it was very famous of it's valuable gems. Even today many relegious places are full of gems. Colombo national museum also one of these palce. There you can see the crown of last king of the country. Even today crown of the Queen Elzabeth in England is decorated with a valuable gem of Sri Lanka. At the national Museum you can see many valuables belonged to the history. I believe at the museum we are able to see most valuable gems in Colombo today.

A castle and a historic building .Residence of a former governor of Ceylon. It has historical value and is now a museum. It has spacious lawns and the building had barracks for the governors guard including stables. Presently it houses the National Museum of Sri Lanka and has many valuable artifacts. A place worth visiting and spending at least 3 to 4 hours in seeing the glorious past of Sri Lanka

The Colombo Museum housed many exhibits exceeding over one hundred thousand items, that provided an insight to the history of the country. They presented a fine testimony to the glory and the grandeur of our ancient civilization. Most of these collections do not have parallels any where in the island. This museum possess a number of exquisite sculptures of Sri Lanka, both in stone and in bronze. Most significant among them is the large seated Buddha image which was found in Toluwila, an ancient site near Anuradhapura. This is one of the best preserved ancient Budddha image so far found in Sri Lanka. Some of other wonderful items in stone in the museum are the rock inscriptions. These show the evolution of the Sinhala script from BRAHMI script . Among other items of interest are Guard stone s, moonstones, carved stone plaques and stone pillars . These could be considered as unique creations of the stone sculpture in Sri Lanka.

The National Museum in Colombo is huge and you can not visit all parts of the museum in one visit. You will find it in a beautiful colonial palace surrounded by a big, beautiful garden. Start your visit and have a look on one theme, another day you will come back for sure to visit the next part!

Sri Lanka is a tiny tear drop shaped island in the Indian Ocean. It is the essence of South Asia, you can find the attractions of neightbouring India and Maldives in this land which is a hundred times smaller than India Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon) is a small island in the Indian ocean of 65,000 square kilometers. Sri Lanka has a population of 18.5 million, a tropical climate, lush green forests and rich history Around 400,000 tourists visit the country each year to take in the sun the sea and the sand. Sri Lanka is a great tourist destination and has a wide range of geographic features and is rich in natural beauty. Large parts of the country is covered in tropical forests, with hundreds of rivers flowing through them, often cascading in awesome waterfalls. At time humorous, sometimes sad, and occasionally serious look at current events and happenings in Sri Lanka Introduction Sri Lanka (Ceylon), is a small island in the Indian ocean of 65,000 square kilometers. Despite being so small the country has a wide range of geographic features and is rich in natural beauty. Large parts of Sri Lanka is covered in tropical forests, with hundreds of rivers flowing through them, often cascading in awesome waterfalls. It's easy to go on and on about the natural beauty of Sri Lanka, this is not the place for it but the travel page is! Climate The southern and western regions have only two seasons, wet and wetter. Despite being a tropical island some parts of the country can almost be mistaken for deserts. Other regions experience rainy and dry seasons. The dry zone looks really wonderful just as the rains start to ease

It's a great place and a must visit - if you are interested in knowing about the culture of Sri Lanka. Started in the colonial times , this institute has a vast collection of artifacts from the ancient kingdoms of Anuradhapura to the Colonial Era. This includes coins, statues , art work , weapons , jewels and many more. The throne and the crown of the last Sinhalese king is one of the major attractions. In addition to historical artifacts there is a natural museum as well. It features many animal mummies and their information.

Sri Lanka National Museum is one of two museums in Colombo. It is the largest museum in Sri Lanka. Its is maintained by the Department of National Museum of the central government. This resulted in the accumulation of a valuable collection of materials pertaining to Sri Lanka. From its inception, special attention has been given to building up of a collection related to Sri Lanka, Orientation and Natural Science. This would symbolize the history of Sri Lanka
