A MUST place to visit. Ecuador has been blessed with a geographical strategic piont and the prove of such wonder is the physical presence of the equator line that crosses our country. This condition plus the amazing andes puts us in the perfect scenery to host a natural wonders. In La Mitad del Mundo you will have a great opportunity to have the a picture with both hemispheres under you, you can expierence the feel of a colonial town and for those who enjoy typical food there is a great offer restaurants.

Despite the touristy nature of the place, there is no excuse not to see it. Weekends are busy with local families, as it is a close-by destination, but those are great days to visit, since there are musical shows in the afternoons. The monument is the centerpiece of the complex, which houses an ethnographic museum depicting the different indigenous cultures in Ecuador. The museum has not been updated in the last 20-or-so years, but it's worth seeing. Other highlights in the complex are the scale model of colonial Quito, the planetarium, and the shops and restaurants along the main plaza. The monument is not located exactly on the Equatorial line, but to have oneself taken a picture with each leg in each hemisphere is too hard to resist. Close to Mitad del Mundo, there are Rumicucho precolumbian ruins and the Pululahu reserve, also places worth visiting.

Just twenty-minutes from Quito is the touristy Mitad del Mundo which is a monument at the centre of the world right on the Equator. For a small entrance fee you can enjoy the sensation of standing right on the equator, have a beer or snack n catch some live music, they frequently have live shows with all kinds of local music, really fun on a good day day with a good band when everyone gets up and starts dancing. There are as usual some little indigenous stalls but due to the tourist impact everything's way overpriced, better suited for a little window shopping! Also good to know that just next to the monument is a small museum set in a pretty garden, that is actually the official Equatorial line which not many people know!
