This is a special place with lots of Dutch Colonial buildings. Some well preserved some being renovated. Although the English did occupy it for quite some period of time, they seem to have largely kept the buildings intact. The Fortifications are very impressive.

Galle Galle Fort covers an area of 36 hectares and encloses a lighthouse, clock tower, many museums, churches, mosques, and several hundred private dwellings. Located... more on the south-western shore of the island, about 115 kilometres south of Colombo and just 18 kilometres south of the popular beach resort of Hikkaduwa, Galle Fort was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site List for its historical and cultural value. It is one of the best preserved 17th century forts in the world, and substantial renovations inside the fort are strictly forbidden. Amazingly, Galle Fort withstood the devastating Boxing Day Tsunami that damaged

One of the best preserved forts from the Colonial area it was originally built by the Portuguese but it was the Dutch who made it the formidable fort it is today. Included in the World heritage list it has some of the best building built in the colonial area including some beautiful churches scattered inside the city. The remains of Fortifications and guns could still be found. A must visit place along the southern coast.

o most people, the concept of a hidden paradise, a place like novelist James Hilton’s Shangri-La with all its richness and breathtaking beauty hidden away and preserved through time by gigantic mountain ranges, is nothing more than stuff for fiction. Then again, not a lot of people have had the good fortune of setting foot in the historic port city of Galle or walked through the fabled streets of its magnificent Galle Fort. Preserved through the centuries so that it looks almost exactly the way it did during its period of Dutch colonization, Galle Fort stands as a testimonial to the fact that it's still possible in these modern times to find a place where the passage of time seems to have been put on slow mode. Uncluttered and untarnished by modernization, the Galle Fort serves as a true memorial to Galle city's rich and glorious past. Recognizing the value of this effort and the wealth of legacy it leaves for today's generation, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) listed the Galle Fort as a world heritage site in 1988.

The port town of Galle in the southwest of Sri Lanka has a splendid natural harbour. The port was in use in pre-Christian times, but gained in importance after the 12th century. By the 14th century it was arguably the most important port in the country, and it retained this preeminence until 1873 when an artificial harbour was built in Colombo. The great Chinese admiral Zheng He commemorated his visit by leaving a trilingual inscription in 1411; the three languages were Chinese, Tamil, and Arabic, implying a cosmopolitan trading community. The Portuguese arrived in 1505, and later built a small fort; but it was after Galle was captured by the Dutch in 1640 that the city rose to its greatest prosperity. The Dutch rebuilt the town and strengthened the fortifications.

A visit to the city of Galle will not be complete without a stroll through the historic and romantic walled streets of the Galle Fort. Occupying a total land area of 36 hectares, the Galle Fort has maintained an atmosphere of tranquility and history that pretty much reflects the Dutch period. Built by the Portuguese in the 16th century as a way to protect the city from invading Tamils, the Galle Fort was taken over by the Dutch in 1640, its defense system further fortified and improved. Many of the buildings one can see in the Galle Fort today are reminiscent of buildings that stood there during the Dutch Era most of which had pillared verandas and a lot of which were old-style mansions that belonged to sea merchants

The 17th c. Dutch Fort at Galle, close to the island.s southernmost point, 120km from Colombo, has the distinction of being the best-preserved sea fort in South Asia. Enter through the imposing stone bastions that encircle the sea-facing promontory and step back in time. Inside the Fort you will find that it exudes old-world charm. The narrow streets are dotted with Dutch colonial villas and there's a welcome absence of vehicular traffic. There are several museums and antique shops that display curiosities from the island's colonial era. Of the many colonial buildings, perhaps the most absorbing is the Dutch Reformed Church, containing ornately carved memorials to the city's Dutch settlers. The Fort also hosts some of the island's most exclusive boutique-style accommodation in former villas restored to their colonial glory.
