Hi, you should be avoid to eat any cold salad just in case of your stomach is not get used to Chinese water. Anything uncooked is not good for your stomach. Also don't eat too spicy food and try to go to big and clean restaurant.
1. Try to make sure the food is finished cooking
2. Try to go to decent restaurants, you can judge by how people dress at restaurants. Should avoid street food
3. Try to get bottle water if you need water, go to convenient shop and buy some
you don't wanna drink unboil water and the food from those stand in the street, especially those spicy Chinese BBQ from those stands.
yeah, like what they say, try to eat in a clean restaurant or the one ur local friend recommend.
anyway, i think u will be fine here, enjoy ur trip :P

Hi
If u come to big cities, food should be no problem, like we have all kinds of restraunts in shanghai,American,thai,india,french,italy...
Most chinese food r normal in the chinese restraunts, but u may not want to try frogs, chicken's fing, duck's touge, bloods, things like that.
And if u don't like to get bones, then don't order a whole fish meal or fried shimp with peel, some chicken dish has bones together.
But most of my guests love the food here.
Welcome to China,the food paradise!

Hello,

As always, the safest bet for travelers is to become temporary vegetarians. Many people don't realize this, but most types of food related illness is a direct result of eating meat. :)

Depending on where you go, it is normally safe to eat street food (again, the less meat content, the better)

Supplement protein with peanut butter, tofu & rice and dried legumes! 9The Chinese invented tofu, after all)

As per recent events, avoid milk products.

And, as with most other countries, don't do tap water.
For my experience, it's better avoid cold things(food or water),very spicy food, sometimes also barbecue by road. before some of my customers had stomach problem, also greasy food, looks most of people from outside of China is not used eating greasy things!
1.If u come to china you will get used to food poisoning.
2.If you eat meat on a stick or some other things on th street never refuse any spicy sauce/spice...it is there for some reason.
3.Always buy bottled water.
4.taking Charcoal is the best solution
seafood definitely, I am also mean Japenese food. or specy food depend on how specy is.
not the road side restaurant, not bottle water from vendors, anything you can't identify.
Hello Mary,
i am in China for 16 years and never became sick from the food, but drink only bottled water, do not buy food from the street and eat in larger restaurants who are crowded with people than its a good restaurant! and yes be carefull with fresh uncooked food!
i am sure you will enjoy it !

Haha, actually, don't eat in the small shop, then it's ok! Take it easy....China is safe! Welcom To China!!
If you order a fish dish, make sure it doesn't come with the fish head.
However, I would suggest you to be really open-minded when you try different food in China.
all food has its reason to exist. but dine in clean place of course
As an American living in China for 2 years now I love Chinese food. I suggest you try things while you are here. I eat street food daily and have never gotten "food poisoning". China has many weird things but many normal things as well. You are not going to get dog or horse on accident either so don't worry.

Make a local friend and have them take you out to try some new things. China has a lot of great food to offer so don't miss out. But do drink bottled water as the tap water is not good to drink. People rinse their mouths with tap water everyday and it's perfectly safe but the water must be boiled before drinking. Also ice may not be filtered or boiled before frozen but those minimal quantities are consumed by people everyday including myself and I'm fine.

However I do recommend bringing your favorite stomach medicine, Pepto, Imodium AD, in the case of emergency Imodium AD can fix anything. Most of the time it's the spicy food that doesn't sit well with people. However if you really don't like Chinese or your scared, stick with the fried rice, easy on the gut and tastes great.
if you strong enough, donot worry about this kind of issues, just enjoy the days in China. If you are not strong enough, pls donot come, this country is for brave people.
it's an interesting question.

1. dont drink running water from sink, it's not drinkable , but it's ok for brushing yr teeth, try to dink boiled water or bottle water;

2. no food you should avoid eating here , unless you are allergic to sth.. when you pick up restaurants, the standard in china sdb same as in your country, clean and delicious !

Enjoy Chinese food , I bet it's yummy !

may be spicy food. lots of westerners are not comfortable with strong hot food, especially in south part of china.
Foods in China are generally delicious to foreigners, so enjoy them as much as you can. However, due to health and eating habit concerns, you may have to keep your appetite within a limited amount, since your internal system might get used to some of them. E.g., sea foods are spectacularly awesome, but they can make cause stomach-ache as well to those who don't eat them often.

Try to get some decent restaurants, since they offer comprehensive options, and more importantly clean. But if you just can't stop being appealed by the foods sold on the stands, then go for it, but control the amount as well.
Well, avoid street food and try take less sea food if you're not near the coastal place
Well...I read some of the other comments here, and I don't think many of them understand that there is a very big difference between hygiene in China and hygiene outside of China...just remember this at all times...and yes, it is easy to get food poisoning, or drink poisoning, why not ?
There are lots of fake products around, also be careful of fake money and fake medicine and fake electronics...the fake name brands can be ok though for cheap shopping...but be careful of the rip off...In China, nothing is really as it seems...
