Question

1st Visit to China - Beijing & Shanghai

Hi I'm planning to visit Beijing & Shanghai in the coming few weeks. I'll be staying in China for 10 days. Thinking of traveling from Beijing to Shanghai by train. This is my first tour in China. Need information about attractions (specially on temples in both cities as well as other attractions), tour planning & other important details which I should be aware of. Have heard little about "Wild Great Wall". Need more info on that too. Is it possible to hire a tour guide who speaks English or Sinhalese fluently? Well of course he/she should have a thorough knowledge about the attractions too. :-) Thank you.

Dear friends,

Thank you all for the support you have displayed and are willing to offer. But at my end there had been a problem of obtaining visa with the tight schedule I have. I was planning to visit China 10th of this month.

So this time I would have to change my travel plans (I’ll be visiting some other country this time), but of course next year during this period I’ll be definitely visiting China.

Thank you all again.
Hi there,

I've been living in Beijing for almost 2 years and have travelled throughout the city as well as many great surrounding areas. I'm always intersted in checking out new places or showing people around to the ones I have already been to. I'm working part time and would be happy to arrange a sight seeing tour or just answer any basic questions you may have. Feel free to email me anytime! By the way, when are you planning on visiting? As the temperature may play a deciding factor on places you would want to go, as well as make some places more enjoyable.

Cheers, and welcome to experience a wonderful China!!

PS- I have made the trip from Beijing to Shanghai by train and can help you with getting tickets as it can be overwhelming to someone new here. Typical train ride takes about 11 hours and departs Beijning around 7PM arringing Shanghai early morning. Options for seats vary of course. I can also arrange a pick up once arrival in Shanghai.

Hi
I didn't work as a tour guide in Beijing or Shanghai. But i'm glad to help you.Beijing is a traditional and modern city. There are some attractions. For example,Great Wall, the Imperial Palace,"Beijing Hutong"."Beijing hutong" is a knid of ancient house. Now Beijing doesn't have too many Hutong. The Imperial Palace has been have about 600 years history. Many foreigners like visit Palace.Beijing has some small temples. In China the most famous temple is the Shaolin Monastery that is in Henan province.

If you from Beijing to Shanghai by train,I think you need spend 10 hours at least.By plain is about 1 hour 45 mins.Shanghai is a big city in China. So it is a modern city.It doesn't have too much ancient element. But in Shanghai countryside has "Wu Zhen" .This is a website about "Wu Zhen".() It has English subtitle.

Beijing and Shanghai are the most developed cities in China. So I guess you find a english tour guide is possible.
If you have other questions. You can ask me.I'm glad to help you.

Have a great time in Beijing!

Yay! A question I can answer! If you're coming to Beijing, don't miss YongHeGong (any cabby will know this name, pronounced yoang-huh-gong) The English name is Lama Temple and is on all tourist maps. It's basically the only Tibetan Buddhist temple around, complete with a full retinue of monks. :)

I'd check out the Temple of The Moon, just slightly West of Temple of Heaven (not so much a temple)

If you have some extra space in your schedule, get on the train to TianJin (the next province over, takes about 45 minutes) and see the Goddess Mazu Temple (and folk religion museum)

Wild wall is easy enough. All the sections are cordoned off, regardless of what section you choose to visit, eventually, you'll get to the signs that say "warning!" and such. There will likely be a guard of some sort, they're not state police, just locals. Offer the guy @ least 20rmb and he'll look the other way as you go off the beaten path.

(for more info, see my last answer to another Great Wall querent)

For tour guides, go with someone reputable that will give you a fair price, by which I mean, have your hotel contact a local travel agent for you...don't just walk out and try to get somebody.

The Chinese have a funny way of doing things, they'll tell you it's o.k....and theres no problem even if the sky is falling... :)

If you can pass for students, do so. Carry small bills and dress down. You'll be less likely to be harangued by "enterprising businessmen"

Good luck !

There r lots to see in BJ. The GW, the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, the Summer Palace, the Ming tombs....hips of ....

And this the the best time to come , not hot , not cold, spring, beeter time

For the wild GW, if u r the 1st time to China, i do not suggest u to do that, it's for expats who stay in CHina longtime or unlesss ohterwise u r with a group who r fans of hiking the Wild places

For SH, quite diffretnt form BJ, it's a business modern city, the trditional scences are less the those in BJ, but u can go to see the Pearl Tower, and the Yu Garden, woth visiting. And if you have enough time , u can have a short tour to the villiages around SH, like Zhou Zhuang, a quite good place, charactering the South China water villiages, the houses, the boats, rowoing the boat along the river, quite nice....

Alright, if u need more info, contact me
