Question

Cable car to the top of Table Mountain on a rainy day?

Can you take a cable car up there even if it's raining? How much are the fees to ride one?

Location

Country: South Africa

Answers

Yes you can - its more about the wind and cloud than the rain - if it is very windy or the cloud is covering the top then they will close the cable car or if you are up there already, tell you to come down. We always advise people to go up when they see the weather is good and do not plan a set day if possible as Murphy's Law says the weather will change. The return car is R145.
Good morning,

The cable car will run on rainy days but if the weather becomes too severe they will stop it.

They sometimes have a summer special advertised and this is at a cost of R65-00 ($6.50) . The usual rate is R135-00 ($13.50).

Hi there, I am sure you have received all the answers you need from the two respondents above. Yes you are able to, but depending on the extent of the rain you have to consider whether its going to be worth the effort and cost (view, discomfort, etc). If you are able to, pick a nice sunny day to go up the big mountain and enjoy the spectacular views. If not, make sure you are dressed warmly and protected against the rain.
In any case have lots of fun!!
yes you can

"Best advice, always do it as soon as u arrive in Cape Town!"
The weather may change while you visiting!
Yes you can, provided the wind is not a concern. Your visibility will be quite poor though. A return ticket costs R145.00
It is not advisable to go up in bad weather. It is miserable up there and the spectacular view is spoiled. It is also cold. The golden rule in Cape Town is when you have a nice day just head for Table Mountain, even if you have to alter your plans slightly. You won't be sorry. The cable car is very weather dependant and high winds and bad weather can scupper plans of going up the mountain.
The price is R145 Return and R65 one way. For children, students and RSA pensioners it is less.
I would not allow any guests of mine to walk down the mountain unless accompanied by an experienced mountain guide.It is very dangerous. Only last week a young Dutch tourist slipped and fell to her death. Table Mountain needs to be treated with the greatest respect as do our oceans.
Cost

Return / One Way:

* Adult R130.00 / R65.00
* Children (Under 18 years) R68.00 / R36.00
* Student ( With valid student card) R88.00 / R47.00
* SA Senior Citizens R68.00 / R36.00
* Family Ticket R330.00 (2 adults & 2 children under 18 years)
* Wild Card - Adult Return R104.00
* Wild Card - Child Return R55.00

The reason pricing is given on return and one way tickets, in case you were wondering is because some rather adventurous people choose to walk up or down the mountain and only ride in the cable car one way. :-D

You can travel in the cable car even if it is raining or overcast, however on a perfectly clear day the views from the top of table mountain are absolutely breathtaking.

"Life is a journey, not a destination."
Answers above explain it all. Also visit the local websites if you need any more info as Cape Town and surrounds have plenty excellent websites.
Hi there. As you've heard from many others, you may be able to take the cable car on a rainy day, but my suggestion is that you should not waste your money to spend R145 to get to the top of the mountain on a rainy or even a cloudy day. If you cannot see that top of the cable station from the bottom of the station, you will not be able to see anything once you get up to the top and table mountain is all about views of the city, table bay and the Atlantic Ocean. If its cloudy you won't see any of this.
Because the cableway operation is dependent upon the weather, they do not take advance bookings. An adult return trip is R145.00 and I would suggest you get there fairly early on the day you wish to go up the mountain, before the masses arrive! Generally, wind is the biggest factor, with rain itself not being such a problem. Also be aware that the cableway will be closed from 20th July to 16th August for annual maintenance.

Have you considered walking up then getting the cable car down? Gives a totally different experience. If you are fit enough of course!

Thank you for your enquiry.

The Cableway operates during rainy weather. However, if it is too windy the Cableway cannot operate. Because the Cableway’s operations are weather dependent we always advise visitors to call our Information line on 021-424 8181.

The current adult return rate is R145. This rate is valid until 30 September 2009. As of 1 October 2009 the adult return rate increases to R160.

Yes depends on the weather
It does go up on rainy days depending on the wind. Ive been to the top on a rainy day but was disappointed because rain means clouds and clouds mean little or no visibility. Although its a great outing the main reason for going up there is the breathtaking views over Cape Town and the surrounds. Sadly on a rainy day its not possible to see the great view. One tip though. If it is raining up there be sure to take something warm with. Perfect weather at the foot does certainly not mean perfect weather at the top. Can be freezing up there.
sure but what is the point if you can't see anything. price is R145 and summer special only after 6pm going up
