A major threat to the existence of Lake Nakuru National Park is the drying up of rivers due to recent incursions into Mau Forest. Unless urgent measures are taken to re afforest Mau, Lake Nakuru, Maasai Mara and even Serengeti ecosystems will never be the same.Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Central Rift Senior Scientist Joseph Edebe says the number of flamingos has declined due to an increased concentration of salt in the waters of the lake.
The destruction of the lake nakuru catchment over o period of time now has had a devastating effect on the lake. The rivers feeding lake nakuru, njoro river, makalia river have almost dried.Coupled with this is the siltation of the lake when it rains hence affecting the salinity of the lake and consequently the population of the flamingoes.
UNRESOLVED HUMAN / WILDLIFE CONFLICT IN KENYA

Peasant farmers, cattle herdsmen and landowners in Kenya have suffered heavy losses thanks to wildlife conservation policies aimed chiefly at appeasing the international donor community.

Since the colonial era that ended with Kenya’s independence in 1963, environment and wildlife management has been geared towards preserving the status of pristine areas solely to attract tourists
from the developed countries. With the tourists came the much sought after tourism dollars.

In the ostensible bid to preserve the wilderness in Kenya, several categories of protected areas are recognized by law. These are: National Parks, National Reserves and Marine National Parks/Reserves.

National parks are intended for the exclusive use of wildlife. Here human activity is permitted strictly as in the appreciation of wildlife in its natural state. Some of the national parks in Kenya include the expansive Tsavo National Park, Mt Kenya National Park, Aberdare Range National Park and the Lake Nakuru National Park. Nairobi National Park, just 10km from the Kenyan capital is said to be the only national park in the world close to a major urban zone. Until recently it also received the highest number of visitors annually, according to official statistics.

Unlike national parks, which are exclusively for the habitation of wildlife, National Reserves were conceived in recognition of the need for local communities to continue benefiting form land, forestry and water resources while conserving wildlife. A prime example is the internationally renowned

It may not be possible for every Kenyan community to benefit from wildlife resources, but its possible to have agriculture, economic growth and tourism taking place hand in hand, each complementing the
other. The Kenyan government can play its part to salvage the national pride, and it can do so by turning away from Western conservationists who still harbour the dream of Africa as a jungle and who want to keep it that way for their own pleasure.

Africa may be underdeveloped for now, but just like anywhere else, the continent has its owners.

The main challenges of existence of Lake Nakuru Park as a bird spectacle are threefold-the pollution of the lake from domestic and industrial wastes from Nakuru town, the decreasing level of the lake and the large mammal population which tends to interfere with the lakeshore breeding grounds of birds. In addition to these two is the fact that the park is completely fenced hence animals cannot freely migrate in and out of the sanctuary. Equally significance is the absence of the elephants which has resulted in some parts of the being heavily forested and hence not ideal for game watching. A major threat to the existence of Lake Nakuru National Park is the drying up of rivers due to recent incursions into Mau Forest. Unless urgent measures are taken to re afforest Mau, Lake Nakuru, Maasai Mara and even Serengeti ecosystems will never be the same.

As a nature lover and a friend of lake Nakuru national park ,yes i agree with you that lake Nakuru waters are residing in an alarming rate this is due to the capture of the waters(the njoro and the makalia rivers) that flow into the lake by the Nakuru farmers in their farming activities secondly with the ill advice handled down to the power of the day in giving out the mau forest to they friends in secure of they political ambitions thus destroying the catchment areas of the two said rivers .
solution vacate the mau and re afforest it regardless of your political ambitions .yes something is been done thanks to our honorable the prime minister who has continued to stand his ground in regard to the vacation of the mau forest and thanks to you for your concern.
