Austria's vini/viticulture is world renowned. Tourists are generally well catered for (visits to Viennese "Heurigen" wine taverns; harvest and wine festivals; wine-women-song theme parties etc.) An unusual aspect would be a visit to a small family operation ("Buschenschank") in, say, the picturesque Wachau region along the mighty Danube river, but off the beaten track. This can include a hike into the vineyards, an educational talk on the flora and fauna of the region and/or hints and secrets of the wine-maker's art, a cellar tour with a sampling of the family's very own, unpretentious and honest wine, followed by copious quaffing (if so desired) of the latter, accompanied by deft Austrian country fare, in the winemaker's rustic living room type of "Gastzimmer". This outing can be combined with a short, romantic voyage by ship from Krems to Melk, the two centers demarcating the Wachau.
