From cost perspective, flying to Honolulu (Oahu) and then to Kauai and then on the way back, stay in Oahu for a week will be the cheaper route. In any case, I do recommend Oahu since it is more lively than Maui especially after spending a week in Kauai. However, if you prefer something less lively, then Maui.
Kauai is more of a garden hikers paradise, still can do your ocean activies. Maui is more of a resort life and distant from everything else, Oahu has more of your tourist life lots of stuff do free.
You need to realize that Kauai and Oahu are both different in way of people and environment. While both islands are both slow in the sense, slower paced then any City in the U.S. Kauai is more slower and less modernized, Kauai is beautiful really country. Whereas Oahu is like a smaller Southern California, almost like Newport.
A good place to stay is in Waimanalo, beach is very close and a relaxing place.
Aloha Friends,
I have read all of the answers and agree with most with exceptions.
You are already going to Kauai for the first part of trip so going anywhere else first is obviously out of the question.
Oahu is the best choice after Kawaii because you will definately be ready a little faster pace. Kauai is beautiful but VERY slow and not much nightlife or shopping at all.
Kailua is my favorite place on Oahu. Kailua is 30 minutes away from Waikiki yet close enough to jump over there for shopping, clubbing, or what not. Kailua offers a laid back country feel with a small town center with wonderful food and shops.
Whatever you decide, you are sure to have a great trip in paradise!
If you need lodging info for Kailua check this website for GREAT deals!
What are you hoping for in a Hawaii vacation? It is more about choosing the place you stay on the island and the experiences you seek that which island, possibly. Both Maui and Oahu have areas where there is great night life, both have great beaches. As has been said in other replies, Maui is more laid back. Oahu has Honolulu and Waikiki Beach, which is more like say Las Vegas. Or you can choose either island and possibly find a sister resort for your time share and get a great deal. Or, pick a sweet island home to stay at on either island at a location you know you will love from the pictures and description. On Maui, I like Paia.

happy travels!
