Question

which are the best places to stay at Lake Turkana - budget to average range ,I am not looking for 5 star treatment.

Location

Country: Kenya

Answers

Your question raises more questions! Which side of Lake Turkana, West (sandy beaches) or East (vulcanic rock)? And what kind of accomodation do you prefer, lodging or camping? Both sides of the Lake host several good campsites, along the shores of the Lake, beautiful scenery on either side. Accomodation in bandas (cottages, containing a bed, often not self-contained, meaning toilet & showers can be found at a central location on the campsite) is often possible - so you do not even have to bring your own camping equipment.
Just let me know your preferences and I can give you a more detailed advice.
i can comfortably recommend, Loyangalani area and the Kenya Wildlife Service facility in Sibiloi national park. The former has several community operayed tented accommodation, while the latter has bandas. all this accommodation is absolutely affordable. The are all in the eastern side of L. Turkana and both have airstrips.
If you could get in touch with LAKE TURKANA EL-MOLO LODGES
at this numbers Phone : +254 (20) - 724384 they are quite cheaper and affordable lodge located near the lake and is not a 5 star lodge but a 2 star.
One place is Oasis Lodge at Loyingalani. Owned by a mad German but recently done up for the film Constant Gardener. Dont expect too much
By the way, Loyangalani is my home village, so I can help you out locally if you intend to visit there.
There is also Kalacha US$190.00 per person per day (Full board accommodation) or Self catering option: US$110.00 per person per day.
I prefer you choose loyangalani
Hi Seth,

There is the Lake Turkana Lodge.
Hi Seth,

There is the Lake Turkana Lodge.
Lodwar is the only town of significance west of the lake. If you want to get to Lake Turkana from the west side, you will have to pass through Lodwar. The town is an adventure in itself.

Still, I recommend staying at least one night here to get the feel of a unique town. The Turkwel Hotel Telephone # +254 (0393) 21201 is the best place to stay. The singles/doubles are cottages with fans, mosquito nets and bathrooms. They cost KShs 400/800 (US$5/10)and include breakfast. Singles with shared bathrooms run KShs 300 (US$4). The food here is good and it’s the center of the town’s night life. Relax outside or step into the lively bar and cool off with a few cold drinks.

If the Turkwel Hotel is full, or you’re looking to stay at a cheaper place, try the Mombasa Hotel. Singles/Doubles are KSh 200/300 (US$3/4).
I recommend Eliye Springs Lodge, which is a medium sized accommodation facility, it has been refurbished recently and it offers quality services to visitors.

If you're looking for natural and human history, go to Sibiloi National park on the Eastern side of the lake. you can camp or stay in KWS bandas.
There are a lot of places in Turkana to stay at.I'd recommend El Molo lodges. Most can be found found at rates of US$20PER night.

Also in the sibiloi national park one can have a campsite, though one must be careful due to the creeping insects like the scorpion, and e with insectcides
