the answer is Beijing
Very well answered above. Peking was the old name in English. Now all Chinese city names are pronounced and spelt in Pinyin (except for Hongkong and Macao). but I guess in many other languages Pekin is still used like in French but more n more people begin to change like last time at the CDG airport in Paris the officer(a typically random guy) said " ah Beijing ,vous allez rentrer chez vous alors?"
Sure.Are you from the earth?
Beijing, but you may here Peking in reference to the airport (PEK)
Beijing or Peking (北京) means "northern capital", in line with the common East Asian tradition whereby capital cities are explicitly named as such.
Peking is the name of the city according to Chinese Postal Map Romanization, and the traditional customary name for Beijing in English (passports issued by the British Embassy are still printed as being issued by the "British Embassy, Peking"). The term Peking originated with French missionaries four hundred years ago and corresponds to an older pronunciation predating a subsequent sound change in Mandarin from [kʲ] to [tɕ][15] ([tɕ] is represented in pinyin as j, as in Beijing). It is still used in many languages.

The pronunciation "Peking" is also closer to the Fujianese dialect of Amoy or Min Nan spoken in the city of Xiamen, a port where European traders first landed in the 16th century, while "Beijing" more closely approximates the Mandarin dialect's pronunciation.

Hello,
Peking is the old name, now it is Beijing, like everywhere in the world names are changing sometimes, it is called Beijing since the cultural revolution.
Welcome to Hangzhou, in east part of China, 2 hours flight from shanghai, 1hour 10 minutes by train from Shanghai.
When Marco Polo came to Hangzhou in the 13th century he declared that
"it is the most beautiful and elegant city in the world". First built
over 2,200 years ago, Hangzhou is one of the cradles of China's civilization.
Hangzhou used to the capital of Wu and Yue States in the 10th century during
the Five Dynasties period. The city began to prosper and flourish in the Tang Dynasty.
The city had its political heyday in the Southern Song Dynasty when it served
as the capital. Hangzhou witnessed rapid commercial boom in the Ming and Qing Dynasty.

Hangzhou's beauty attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists to its
exquisite West Lake (Xi Hu) area each year to enjoy the placid lake,
beautiful gardens, reflecting pools, lavish temples and friendly lakeside teahouses.
Beijing is the capital of China.peking is in Beijing
Beijing is the capital of China.peking is in Beijing
Beijing absolutely
Many place names in China took their initial influence from the Cantonese pronunciation, likely due to Hong Kong's position as the gateway to China before the mainland opened up. Hence "Peking", which resembles "Buck-king" in Cantonese. Similarly Canton became the early name for what is now better known as GuangDong and GuangZhou. The correct mandarin phoneticisation of Peking is Beijing (北京)hence the more recent, and politically correct, name of the Chinese capital as now more commonly known.
Peking or Beijing, both is correct. Peking is the old name and until now stil in use. And word of "Beijing" is from 2 words thats Bei and Jing (Method read from Chinese caracter), Bei is means Northern and Jing is means Capital of the country. In Southern China there is a city called "Nanjing". Nan is means Southern and Jing is means Capital of the country. For above city name in China, it was connected with history (Ming's dynasty).
LOL, So many weird replies.
you can call it both Peking and Beijing.
Peking and Beijing are the same city. Peking is the English spelling based upon a previous Romanization system. Beijing is the spelling using the current Romanization system (Hanyu Pinyin). For example, Hong Kong is using the old system, and Xiang Gang the new system.
Beijing, which can also be called Peking, is the capital of China.
Peking is the old name from the time of Republic of China. Beijing came after the current regime decided to come up with a new spelling system for translating Chinese characters to English pronunciation. And yes, indeed it is the same city. Peking is still used under airport code (PEK) and of course, the Peking Duck.
The answer to both parts of your question is YES.
Peking is just the old name of Beijing. Many people still use that older name.
Peking is from foreigners' pronunciation,Beijing is from Chinese, nowadays,we insist Chinese not Peking
- it's not a case of old vs. new romanization, nor is it a case of "foreigner vs. Chinese" pronunciation, nor is it a case of China "renaming" the cities. It's quite simply two completely different dialects: Putonghua vs. Cantonese, the latter of which was the major influence for early foreign pronunciation of Chinese cities thanks to Hong Kong's international status. It is no less correct to use either linguistically, though politically Putonghua is the language of mainland China and hence its romanisation should be used over Cantonese one for pronunciation of place names. The only "change" by China itself is that with the opening up of the country, it has since placed an emphasis on using the romanisation that reflects the actual language used in the country.

It's also no surprise that "Chinese takeaway's" the world over seem to be more Cantonese based than anything else - the Cantonese were the early ones to spread their wings, hence their early influence on the world's perception of China.
Peking has seldom been used for the city's name, but still been used in some other traditional definitions. E.G. We call our national art "Peking Opera" but not "Beijing Opera" as well as the most traditional delicacy in Beijing is "Roasting Peking Duck" but won't be called "Beijing Duck".
Peking and Beijing are the same name of China capital city. Peking is the old name, Beijing is the new name according to mandarin pinyin
I think you've got the right one.Peking is the old name, now we call it Bejing.
peking = beijing = the capital of china
Peking is the old name of Beijing.
Peking is Beijing. do you wanna travel there? it's a good place to start!
Peking is the old name of Beijing, it was called before the cultural revolution. Now the correct name of the capital of China is Beijing.
Hi,
As I known, Beijing aslo was called Beiping in the years of the Republic of China(1912-1945).Only in that perios was called Beiping.
Lin Zhao
The question relates to the system of rendering the name in the latin alphabet. Even when the mainland still used the old Romanization system, it was still pronounced like "Beijing"
peking = beijing = the capital of china
Hi
Beijing is made from Pinyin , and officially used in China today.
And Peking was used in the old day before 1949, which was
an old calling historically.
Cheers.
Hiya, the capital of China is Beijing, Peking is the old name before 1949, which was the year that People's Republic of China founded, and after that, it has been changed to Beijing. But when you refer to Beijing Opera, we still write as Peking Opera. :)
peking and Beijing both refer to the capital of China...Like most ppl mentioned ahead, Peking is the old name for Beijing. Can find the clue in one of the greatest writer of China -- lin Yutang's famous book Moments in Peking. And Peking University--the most famous university in China still uses the old name.
beijing is the capital city of modern china ,peking is the old name
In Dutch as well ``Peking`` is still used most often
Peking is the old name.So Beijing and Peking are all capital of China.
yes , exactly is.

Peking was an old name of Beijing.
Of course.That's the same.
they are the same!
Peking is the historical name for the same city. Romanization via the Pinyin method resulted in Beijing.
Actually,Peking is the same as Beijing. It's the different prouncation. Both of them are the same. They are the capital of China.
Yes, Peking is our Capital, Come and see, u r gonna feel the traditional culture power of China!
-Vanessa
Sure.
That's just old style spelling, Take my city for instance,Chongqing, old as Chungking.
Beijing is the official name in English. But in some other languages they still use Peking, such as French.
Both of them
Beijing is the capital of China. Peking is the old Wade-Giles system of romanizing Asian words, where as Beijing in the pinyin system actually shows the true sound of the actual Chinese characters 北京。 However Peking and Beijing are one and the same city.
Peking=Beijing , they are the same city, the capital of China.
yup, as many people have pointed out above, Peking is the old name for Beijing ;)
Pechino in italian, peking=beijing is the same
I think they are the same place place.Peking/Beijing just different words, but now normally just use Beijing.
Hi Ari,

Yes on both. Beijing is the capital. Peking is the same city but the old spelling.

Just like Bombay changed to Mumbai.

Have a nice day.
the same
:) Beijing. Just look it up.
no chinese call it peking ,all chinese call it bei jing
no chinese call it peking ,all chinese call it bei jing
In 19th century, there were two French reporters who came to china and stay in Beijing, for their writing , they use pei for bei, and k for j, on this way, they wrote Peiking instead of Beijing on their report. Acturally,Beijing is cexactly prounced in Chinese language. Since 1959, we all use Beijing.
Peking is Beijng,Captial of China.Peking is the old name.
