Hallo Piers, you will have to go to the Tiete bus station in Sao Paulo, which is not far from Guarulhos airport. Expect to spend at least 5 hours if you want to go by bus. I strongly suggest you to get a private transfer to go to Ilhabela, which will get you there in a more comfortable and hasslefree way, for you won't have to carry your luggage into the bus station, bus etc... It's definitely worth paying a bit more for a more pesonalised service, than saving some pennies and taking 5 hours to arrive at your final destination. If you want we can provide you with a private transfer.
Hi Piers,
Ilhabela is 210 km from São Paulo City, so it would be much cheaper to go by bus. Go to the Tietê bus terminal (Rodoviária Tietê) and look for the Litorânea Transportes Coletivos Ltda bus line. If available the "leito" option is a bit more expensive but much more comfortable - the buses have reclining seats.
Have a good trip,

Hi Piers,
In order to go to Ilhabela, you have take a bus from the airport and go to the "Rodoviaria do Tietê" (still in SP City). In the Rodoviaria, I will take a bus to São Sebastião - north shore of São Paulo. In São Sebastião you have to take the ferry boat to Ilhabela... That's it!
Costs:
Bus ticket from Guarulhos International Airport to Rodoviária do Tiete = R$ 30,00
Bus ticket from SP to São Sebastião = R$ 37,50
Ferry Boat São Sebastião Ilhabela = Free - 24/7
Hello Piers,
1st of all you have to go to the "rodoviaria", grand bus station. website
I´d take a cab. You can buy your tkt to Ilhabela at website
It will cost about R$38,00 = US$17,00, one way

Enjoy!
Sorry can't help u on this one as I'm in Rio but if you ever come to rio hit me up
Pier, I´d stick to Patricia Aulicino's answer. To it I'd add some comments:

1 - at the airport, look for the red and blue buses named "Airport Bus Service" - they are the ones she mentioned

2 - if you come alone, this red and blue buses beat taxis in price when going into town - The Airport is out of town. If you come in parties of 2 or more, taxis have a price advantage.

3 - When you get to the Sao Paulo Bus Station, make sure you choose the Litoranea buses to Sao Sebastiao that take you all the way to the ferry boat, because some don't and you'd have to take a taxi from the Sao Sebastiao Bus Station to the Ferry, which is not that far anyway.

And by the way, how is your Portuguese? Because there will be a lot of interactions!!!

Have fun! Be a traveller!
Hi Piers.Would be cheaper to go by bus,you have to take a bus from the airport and go to the "Rodoviaria do Tietê"(Tiete bus station in Sao Paulo)and look for the "Litorânea Transportes Coletivos",take a bus to São Sebastião,in São Sebastião take the ferry boat to Ilhabela.
Have a nice trip!
Definitely the cheapest (and longest) way will be by bus, just make sure to learn some basic communication words in Portuguese.

Best of luck!
ya, evthg said. take a taxi, if u can afford it. if not, take a bus. both safe there in that area. best, soeren website (rio has more beauty than SP and in general it is more awesome!!!!)
Piers, there's a bus from the airport to Tietê Bus Station. It's called Airport Bus Service. From Tietê, there are five buses going there daily. The bus company's name's Litorânea. From there you can take the 10h30 or the 13h30 bus to São Sebastião (Balsa). That's where the Ferry goes to Ilha Bela. Your trip will cost you around R$ 70,00.
You can also rent a car. ILha Bela is a place where's good to have a car to go around, if you don't know anyone there.
The airport is already on one of the roads to Ilha Bela.
Hope this is helpful. Regards.
Yes, You can get to Ilhabela by bus.But I dsuggest you take a cab from the airport - bargain to have a fixed fare - to take you direct to ILHABELA .This ia cheaper(ALL EXTRA-MONETRY COSTS CONSIDERED ).I did this when I first visited there with a friend. You can come back by bus.Carrying your luggage to Tiete to take a bus is ( a bit ) un-safe and cumbersome : remember ' penny wise pound foolish' IF YOU INSIST ON GETTING THERE BY BUS 1 ADVISE YOU ASK FOR A LOCAL GUIDE.You can reacH me before you arrive on : 55- 11- 83848707.
Hi, I think th two ladies answers are more appropriate.
Enjoy your time here and be safe.
Hello.
if you need more informations, tell me.
At Garulhos and at Rovaviaria Tiete in Sao Paulo you may be able to negotiate with cab drivers for special rate to your next destination. If you were lucky enough to find a cabbie at Garulhos who would take you all the way to São Sebastão for R$80 or R$90, it will save you an immense hassle at Tiete. It would even be worth R$100 or more to me because you save so much time and so much hassle of dealing with your bags at the bus station, men's room, lunch counter, etc. I think from São Sebastão to Ilhabela the ferry is free. Whatever the case, if POSSIBLE, try to spend some time on the "OTHER" side of the island where truly "the other half live" in extreme poverty!
Wow! As if we didn't have enough empty answers, misleading ones are too much!

Please, a Taxi will not go to Ilhabela for 80 or 90 bucks, not even with a gun to his head. 100 is what you pay to come into town, like 40 minute drive. Ilhabela is around 200 km, with tolls.

Nuff said!
Dear Piers,
I´ll give you some suggestions about your trip to Ilhabela:

1- The first step is go to the bus station ("Rodoviaria do Tietê") from the airport. About 9 Pounds (R$ 30,00). You can take a taxi as well, but the costs will be higher (about 30 Pounds).

2- From the bus station you´ll need to take a coach to São Sebastião (R$ 37,50) about 11 pounds. ****Important: this company do not accept credit or debit card, just cash (reais)****

3 - You can say to the coach driver that you´re going to Ilhabela and then he´ll leave you near the ferry boat (you´ll need to say it in Portuguese or you can give him a note in portuguese asking that- suggestion).

In Ilhabela you can go by bus to your accomodation if you want to save money.

Tip:***You´ll need a repellent in Ilhabela***

By bus is cheaper way you must going to Tietê bus station and take a bus to Ilha Bela ! There are several companies avaiable....But if you prefer , By taxi will costs much more money and the travel will be approximately one hour or maybe more faster!
Take the bus (Tieté station)! It's peanuts in relation to any other transport. For more specific detail contact me, hjc at website
you have to go to sao sebastiao first!
