Answers

I find Guangzhou very safe. Of course you must exercise the same care for yourself and your belongings as you would in any other city in the world (big or small).
China is fine, like anywhere in the world you can always fine trouble but in China with the death penality still in I guess they think twice before committing a crime. As for the unemployed, they do not give up in China and seek the governments money they are just changing jobs and do not turn to crime like the western world

I've been here for 3 years now and find it very safe. It seems that many unemployment from factories has returned home to their original farmland homes. Like traveling anywhere, you still must be cautious as a foreigner in the country.

On the main streets and around the public areas, Guangzhou is relatively safe. However, you should know that the city is one with many small alleys and walkways, always exercise caution when choosing to use these shortcuts in getting to places.

Hi there,I think Guangzhou is ok,like any other place, has good ppl and also bad ppl,you should take care of your stuff, dont go to crowd place.have a nice trip
China like any country has it's share of pickpockets and petty thieves. Don't carry large amounts of cash and avoid putting your mobile phone into your pants pockets. Back backs should be secured or worn to the front. This is all basic knowledge any experienced traveller will know. There are so many kind and helpful people in China. You will enjoy travelling here.

yes it's pretty safe...
Hi Leo,

I understand your concern. Crime rate is up but I can not say that I have seen it. I find Gunagdong safe. I would not worry about it at all.

Have a safe trip

Anders
hey I don't know it is unsafe to travle in China, we still have a lot of visitors , also trave agencies are pretty nice since they want to get good business during this time.
No worry at all
The big cities are safe, but there has been some problems in the smaller townships and there are some places you should never go to by bus. But again, if your just traveling to the big cities your fine. I've never heard of any problems with the train, which is how I prefer to travel.
Nearly the same, maybe a little worse than normal, but that depends on your selfcare, don't travel on yourself,Never go to dark and little narrow streets etc. anyway, like any big cities in the world.
i´ve been here almost a year and i haven´t seen anything weird happen. I find it quite safe, you can walk around late at night and it´s perfectly safe...
it's pretty safe here!
quite safe。 But you should pay more attention on you belongings when you are in the Train Station.Better if you will have someone who is already in this place to pick you up.
of,it's very safe!!!!what's more, the phenomenon of unemployment is popular around the world, not only in China.Hoping you to have a visit
Do you think L.A is a safe city especially today there are so many unemployment in the US? I don't konw why do you come to china,a business travel or a short trip? Indeed,Some places are dangers in Guangzhou, but i think you shouldn't go there anymore. Take it easy,my friend. It's just a city as same as any others in the world.
yes, sure , come and enjoy have fun!
I THINK IT'S SAFE, BECAUSE IT'S HAPPENED NOTHING BAD TO ME THIS YEAR
IT IS SAFE.
one more thing: be cautious with fake money when you go shopping
Like in any big city, there`s safe spots and less safe spots, safe moments and less safe moments
I found Guangzhou very safe. You'll notice that people keep closer care of their personal items (backpacks, luggage, purses, etc.) than in other parts of China, but overall, if you're cautious, it is a safe city.
I'm not in Guangzhou so I can't actully answer your question. But I'm sure China is a safe place.
I'm a local here . Yes , the unemployment is up now . But everything is fine here . You don't have to worry about that . Guangzhou just like normal days . Lots of foreigners work here or travel here .
Hi Leo, I used to work there for 4 years. The only area in Guangzhou you need to be careful is the old train station area. It would be much safer if you have a Chinese guide accompanying you, and remember NEVER show your precious in the public as this is the clue for the thieves.
For girls, better take good care of handbags!
Boys, it is ok.
The unemployment wont cause the crimes directly. Guangzhou is still safe comparing with other high crime rate cities in the world. Just make sure you dont get involved in any fights in night clubs and watch your belongings all the time...Good luck~
Yes I think so. Last time when I got there for first time, just myself there, and I felt a little scared about night walking in the street,so many act of violence from TV about the city. But It's ok I think. No body will trouble you if you are not "special" from others.(Like your take a lot of money.) And the view there is great. The local food is delicious. It's not far from Macao and Zhuhai. You can eat seafood! If you go to the city, enjoy it!
Hi, as everywhere in China it is safe for tourist to go out in the city, but as far as i understand from my Chinese friends Guangzhou is not as safe as Beijing, but usually western people are ok.

It is safe in total.but there are many thief,so you should be carefully when you are in bus.
I think it is safe. More and more foreigners come to China for travelling and working. You stay in the main streets, department stores...No problem.
Leo,
I think for the most part it is safe. If you don't flash your wealth around and you pay attention to your surroundings you should be fine.
You need to be aware of people that are not Chinese as well of course! There are many different people in Guangdong Province that are here for many different reasons.
Stay alert and stay safe.
Leo,good evening, china is more safe than others.i have been to theUK,where my teacher asked me the same questions about china..shang hai....guang zhou....he thought there were lots of armies who holding the big guns in the streets, haha, when he came he said china is wonderful!welcome to china!
Hi Leo,
I am glad to receive your e-mail.In my opinion, it is safe to travel in China. There are many reasons. Firstly,Chinese are polite to foreigners for a long time. Many people are kind to guests from other countries.Secondly but important, most of robbers are afraid of dealing with the bad result from diplomatic affair. At last,I advice you to take care of your belongings wherever you travel, because you need them to give you a wonderful travel time.

Hello! I can't give you a good answer, because I've never be to Guangdong. Yes, I hear rumors about the crime rate being worse there than anywhere else in China, but that's not my own experience. I've only lived in Shanghai and Dalian.
I am in Canton city right now, I think it is as safe as before the financial crisis. Of course, you should always exercise the same safety precaution you would anywhere. It is also good for you to register with local embassy in case of emergency. They will be able to assist you.
Hello Leo Sun,

I’m glad to answer this question for you. Canton is a very developed and peaceful city. Being nearby Hong Kong, it definitely has a large English speaking community than some other inland cities of China. Of course, like anywhere in the world, you will have to be careful with your belongings. Train stations and crowded places can be vulnerable for pickpockets. esp., with foreigners.
have a nice stay there!

it is not safe to travelling to guangzhou city. especcial after 10 pm you still on the streets.so dangerous. and whenever you are over there donot put more that 100 yuan i mean cash in your wallet. and i donot think it is a good city to travell maybe just for shopping !
Guangzhou is quite safe, especially less crowded than before!
There are many patrol teams on the street, approach to the police in case of emergency.
ya , really safe
Yeah, Its fine. The only thing to look out for is pickpockets. Aside from that people are general very welcoming

The golden rule in travelimg is to be on guard at all times.
Canton is a safe city to visit.
I have no idea why those people would descrip Canton as dangerous, they might just have some terrible experiences.

To be fair and honest, Canton is in general a safe city. And of course, there will be some minor problems like pickpockets, and I am sure every cities in the world will have this problem. ;o)
It is very safe travelling to Guangzhou City now.Because many unemployment in china near the Pearl Delta had come back their hometown.
it's quite safe in Guangzhou city but u still should have to take care of your own belongings
China is pretty safe.. As long as your not acting stupid or get lost in the absolute wrong parts of town (and even then it's still pretty safe) you should be fine..
Ofcours it's safe.... Don't worry! I'm stay in GZ for many years...The public security is quite well, and many foreigners live in here. So if you come, contact me, let me show you arround or anyting need my help!
I think it is very safe. But use common sense if you go places at night, and you always need to take care of your own belongings.
i think it's pretty safe though it may has some negative reputation
I've been living in Canton for sometime, and it's so far so good. It's not necessary to consider it a place where people would easily get robbed or killed. But of course you shall always watch your belongings just as in other crowded places.
As for the unemployment you noted, I don't think it has affected Canton very much so far as I can perceive from people on the street.
I would say it si quite safe for a traveller, but you have to be careful and don't bring much cash and show them in public. For ladies, you'd better leave your valuble neclece or the other diamond ring in the safty box of the Hotel.
Do not too be polite when some try talk with you by the excuse they want to practise their English.
Take a good care!
Police Call in China:110
How anyone can think China is safe in any way I don't understand !!!
There are scamsters, cheats, thieves and gangs operating everywhere, the police and security is not helpful, there is no legal recourse...If you go there, make sure to put all your money, passport and tickets in a bag UNDER your clothes, and then still watch out for the razor artists...they are real good...But GZ is probably a little better than Dongguan...that is the crime capital of the world !
