If it was me, I would say the soho area. My wife and I use to live in the east village, at 14th St. and 1st Ave. about 14 blocks north of SoHo. SoHo is much trendier, more intimate and less touristy than Times Sq. Also, the subway and bus system can get you to times square and other sites very quickly...and it runs all night.
Thank you all but I think I'll stay in soho
My wife and I like to stay in the Times Square area close to everything. It is walking distance to great restaurants, the theater district, shopping, Central Park, and of course the lights of Broadway that everyone who comes to the city wants to see. Bring comfortable walking shoes and plan on using your feet to see a lot of things. Cabs get expensive and the subways can be confusing to visitors. Use them sparingly. That is why we find the Theater District or Times Square to be the most centrally located place to stay. We always check out a site called that locates the best deals on the internet. We can often get a nice hotel room at half price, some of which are right at Times Square like The Millenium. Figure on a half priced room in a good hotel with nice rooms here costing about $150-$170 a night depending on the season. Always ask about an upgrade when you check in. Smaller hotels with much smaller rooms can be found. Don't book anywhere until you check them out online and read reviews on tripadvisor.
Times Sq area is good for thetare restaurants but touristy too. Soho wil have fewer good hotels but is great for trendy resturants, active nightlife and day shopping. If you have specific hotels in mind let me know.
if you go to queens jamaica area we can save alot of money but you have close access to bus/train to manhattan
