Question

best neighborhoods to stay in London (moderate priced) convenient to sightseeing in London and for day trips outside London

Which neighborhoods are best (moderately priced hotels ) for London sightseeing and catching trains for various one-day trips. My wife and I (middle-aged) visit London end of May for one week. Staying in London the full time will take one day trips to (Cotswold, Leeds Castle, Salisbury Bath , Hever, etc). We are considering trains over buses because of travel time

It depends what you want to pay. I would suggest avoiding anywhere around Bayswater or Kings Cross as hotels round there can be pretty sleazy, but they are convenient for Paddington and central London. Maybe think south, around Westminster, London Bridge area or even East London near Liverpool Street or Docklands.
Hi.
I recommend Victoria area. Westminister
I will tell you why.
Train Station and Coach Station about 500 metres apart. ( I know you mention train is faster BUT is unreliable big time and you have the option if that happens).
Also this area not far from MAJOR turistic attractions such as Buckingham Palace, Westminter Cathedral, Harrods, Hyde Park, St James Park, London Aquarium, London Eye, Houses of Parliment, Big BEN... and many others which you can do by foot.
I recommend you walk as you see much more than Tube and its cheaper.
If you are unable to walk long distances, try Sightseeing Buses.
Have a lovely time and hope you enjoy it.

Have a look at hotels in the Sheperd's Bush area. You may find them not too expensive and the area is not too far away from central London. We have the luxury of three underground and one over ground tube stations apart from various bus connections not only with the West end but also with south London. I 've just Googled Sheperd's Bush hotels and it came up with 10 pages of useful websites. Good luck and have a great time in London.
Best wishes
