Question

What commercial caves are near Madrid or Barcelona? How far away? Do they have Web sites I could visit for prices and times?

Hi,

I have now idea about Madrid as I am from Barcelona.

There are plenty of caves open to the public within a 20 to 30 miles range from Barcelona, in the Penedes wine producing region (the 2nd in Spain).

Among them we could mention the big cava (Catalan sparkling while or local champagne) makers:
Codorniu
and Freixenet

Smaller producers such as

Parès Baltà, high quality still and sparkling wines

Albet i Noya
high quality organic still and sparkling wines

Another big name is Torres

Ok, I see there might be a confusing term here...
What do you mean by "caves"?

Here local sparkling wine and the cellar where is produced are called "cava", and the Catalan plural is "caves". That's what my colleague Patrick is talking about. Is that what you mean?

Or maybe you are referring to the English word "cave" (i.e. natural tunnel inside a rock mountain).

In that case in Barcelona you have the Coves del Salnitre in the mountain of Montserrat: and (45 min from Barcelona)

A similar effect, but not exactly a cave: the unique salt mines of Cardona: (1h30min from Barcelona)

There are also some little known caves with prehistorian paintings in the south of Barcelona (2h drive or more). Find out more about it here:

As an official tourguide, I can organize day and halfday trips to all these places as well to the Cava wine cellars. I provide transportation if required aswell.
Let me know if you are interested, and... Happy New Year!
Dear Mr.
Very close to Barcelona we have the wineries from El Penedés. Companies like Freixenet and Codorniu offer very nice tours visiting the wineries and there are just 30 miles from Barcelona.
I offer tours to the wineries. If you want to check my webside that would be
barcelonasandratours.

Thanks and best regards,
