We are staying in the Old City but would like to see West Island. What is the best/easiest way to travel? Can we use public transportation?

Public Transport here in Montreal is excellent. As you are staying in Vieux Montreal you are close to 3 Metro stations. Best place yo look for route will be System de transport deMontreal (STM)
Take any Metro to the Lionel-Groulx station, where you take the 211 bus, which will take you to the West-Island community of Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue. It is quite a pretty route, once you get off the highway, and it covers a fair bit of geography. The town of Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue has waterside eateries and is a good place to have lunch or dinner before heading back into the city.
