Don't get disheartened by the first impression in Tangier harbour. It is a pretty rough place but not all of Morocco is like this.
If you stay in the north you should definitely go to Chefchauen! Wonderful litte mountain city!
Roman history: Volubilis
Surfing and atmosphere: Essaouria
Culture, shopping and athmosphere

In Marrakech I think you should stay in our guesthouse ( We also have a budget alternative with a small pool , both very central in the medina.

There is sooo much to explore. Would need to write a whole guidebook!
Have a great time!

Ourika Valley approx 40km from Marrakech. Scenery absolutely stunning, people so friendly. Takes you back in time as the pace is so relaxed. A trek by mule to Timishee a must. I am british and my husband is Moroccan and we have a guest house with a small swimming pool in the Village of Sitti Fatma, which is famous for its 7 breathtaking Waterfalls. Our rooms start from 120dh a night, up to 400dh. We also have 2 river terraces where you can eat, or just sit and relax with a book and watch the world go by. It is really easy to get to Morocco from the South of Spain by one of the ferries that run to Tangiers from Algeciras and to travel by train as far as Marrakesh. Trains are good and relatively cheap .... but as other people have said we could write a book about where to go and what to see in Morocco.
