Answers

Yes.

There are number of great places to go, mostly on the North Shore. In-town, there are a number of great trails around the spectacular Stanley Park, but the best and most rugged trails are across the bridge(s) in North Vancouver & West Vancouver, just north of the city. The best known is the Baden Powell Trail (named for the founding father of the Boy Scout movement) which continues for several miles/kilometres (its also part of the Trans-Canad Trail system). There are plenty of shorter trails at Grouse Mountain (including the legendary Grouse Grind, straight uphill under the chairlift), at Mount Seymour, and along the Capilano River.

A little further north, Along Highway 99 towaard Whistler, has great hiking around Lion's Bay, Squamish, and of course, Whistler which this winter will be home to the downhill, cross-country and ski-jumping events for the2010 Winter Olympic Games.

There are also somr nice trails east of Vancouver around Burnaby mountain (around the campus of Simon Fraser University (known locallly as just SFU), and at Buntzen Lake (with a great beach), north of Port Moody.
I do not know about Vancouver but since you are already going to be on the west coast..if you happen to go to Alberta you should go to Banff. Its beautiful there!
Toronto also have alot to offer just 1 hour north of the City. with quite cottages, lakes, and places for backpacking and the like.very affordable as well.
Good luck.
