You can take a bus from Cusco to Ollantaytambo. In Ollantaytambo you can take a train to Aguas Calientes (Machupicchu). I'm going to Cusco september 10. I'm a adventure sport guide in Cusco. Write me to email

See you, JOrge

How can this possibly be rated the best answer? Is this a joke? What is wrong with Localytes?
It's a good question, other than arriving by foot on the Inca Trail, Peru Rail has a monopoly on transport to Aguas Calientes, and therefore Machu Picchu.
I believe there is now a private road transport service that can take you as far as the big hydroelectricity plant outside of Aguas Calientes, from where you can walk into the town itself.
This is a lot cheaper than taking the train, but much less reliable and there is no information online, you'll have to ask around in Cusco or Ollantaytambo.

Hi,
There are buses you can take to go to Aguas Calientes,l send you a link here below: website
(Mostly the buses are arranged with the tour guide agency ) :)
There is a new route that takes you by road through Sta Teresa and Sta Maria (i.e. on the OTHER side of Machu Picchu). The total package (with the R/T coach trip, R/T bus up to site, site entrance fee) is $130.00
Contact us email if you need help with this.

The cheapest way to get to Machu Picchu is going by bus to Santa Teresa, then taking a train from Hidroelectrica train station to Aguas Calientes. That journey will take you like 9 hours but the road is not good. The total price will be between US$70 to US$70 american dollars. The other way to get to Aguas Caliente is by train and the round trip cost US$90 american dollars. Once you are in Aguas Calientes you can climbe up to Machu Picchu or take a bus - one way costs you US$7 american dollars. We can offer a tour which includes train tickets, bus tickets, entrances and guide for US$185 american dollars. email us to email or email
To go to MP -and let me tell you that this is safe- you have to take the train -Pls check website- being the Backpacker train the cheapest one, arriving to Aguas Calientes there is a Shuffle service to get MP...
I dont recommend to use any other way, this option is not cheap, but is the best one.
There are two alternatives: You can take the train from Cusco-Poroy to MP-Aguas Calientes or u can take the train from Ollantaytambo -Sacred Valley- to MP-Aguas Calientes...for both alternatives, you would expend around $6 in taxis to get Poroy or Ollantaytambo -in taxi or a bus-
if you wants to go by bus you can go in the way to santa teresa an santa maria and then you must walk from that place following the railroad way till aguas calienates from there you can take a bus to machupichu or walk up from agus calientes till the inca city other way but you must walk is go by bus till ollantaytambo and from there you must walk following the railroad last time i did it with some friends of mine we wak aroun 10 hours is nice but can be hard and you can start to hate the railroad way anyway the lansacpe i really beautiful if you want more ideas writte to me good luck ernesto
Last year I bought a cheap ticket from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes. It was the local train and it cost me S/.20 . I made my way to Ollantaytambo by public transport. There is a daily service from Regocijo Square to Ollantaytambo. I costs S/.10
You can get Machu Picchu only by bus from Aguas Calientes, otherwise hiking 2 hours uphill.

Make a budget travel with website
The cheapest way to get to Machu Picchu is by Santa Teresa town and then walk 3 hours no stop to Aguas Calientes. Not recomendable.
Try the Local train only and pay the minimum fee for the train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes.

HI, U CAN GO BY BUS AND THEN U HAVE TO WALK TO AGUAS CALIENTES, THE MOST IMPORTANT TOWN IN THE WAY IS SANTA TERESA, AND THERE U CAN FIND THE BEST PLACE WITH HOT SPRINGS, ITS REALLY NICE
The cheapest way to get Machupicchu is via Santa Teresa, there are some travel agencies in the main square offering some tours, I can offer the safest way via train , please see our web page website for some other info.

If you're in the mood for gorgeous landscapes not many tourists get to see I strongly recommend you the route "Jean-Jacques Decoster from Cuzco-Peru" is telling you about. The new route promises a great experience. In case you're looking for the cheapest stuff, I did that by getting to Cuzco and asking on the streets near the main square. There are a lot of tourist agencies there so you can get different prices. Most hostels give that kind of info too.
If you are going to Aguas Calientes (the entrance door to MachuPicchu)you can only acces through the train (there are many classes. The cheapest is "Backpackers" class)but you can get it from Ollantaytambo in a service known as "Cerrojo". That's the cheapest way to get there. You can always take a bus Cusco - Ollantaytambo - Cusco, or... maybe not always... depending on what day you take that bus, you might have to spend an extra day in Ollantaytambo waiting for next bus.

It is also important to book your train ASAP because it gets crowded sometimes. I would advice you to do it as soon as you arrive to Cusco (or maybe after leaving your bags at your hostel, lol). There are a couple of offices where you can get those tickets, but i would not recomend you to book one way or in Ollantaytambo. Get that Cerrojo in a round trip in Cusco. That should be the cheapest.

In sum, buy those Cerrojo tickets in Cusco and then take a bus to Ollantaytambo to get on board of your train. When you come back from MachuPicchu it will drop you back in Ollantaytambo and finally you take a bus back to Cusco. Good luck!!!
My friend Ara:
Please be cautious: The "cheapest" way, in my country, may be the unsafest way to travel; I would recommend you to conform a group and distribute the expenses; never travel alone, never take the first taxi offering you a ride (you should feel confidence in the driver, if not, look for different one, it's worth the effort) keep your valuables always at hand, use localytes anywhere possible, and, ... ALAS! today I heard on the news that there soon will be a new train operator from Cuzco to Machu Picchu. Good Luck!

yes, if u know a person who lives in cuzco you will find other busses that sometimes are cheapest than going with a touristic guide. If u want to go and dont waste so much money in travel I recommend you to look for a person who lives in Cuzco. xD!

however u can walk that section in 3 hrs..very cheap way that can be no more than 50 soles:-)-...nice placres to see like waterfalls
Actually the cheapest way is to buy your rounded backpacker ticket from Ollantaytambo to cusco and take a 5 soles (2 dolars)bus from Cusco to Ollantaytambo.
Hi, I went to M.P in July, there were 4 of us and we took a bus to Ollantaytambo where we caught the train for $60 return. This is by far the safest way to get to MP, the journey is fairly scenic in parts.

I hope you have a nice trip - walk up at 4am if you want to see the sunrise!

Hi everyone!

Thank you for all your answers. I made it to Machu Picchu and only spent US$85, including the entrance. I wrote about how to do it on my website. Please take a look and let me know what you think.
