Im planning an asian trip singpore, malaysia and thailand, any tips? I'd like to try backpacking and book as I go, is that possible? My planned date is April 12-22, 2011, Im planning to spend 3 days in singapore, 4 days in malaysia and 3 days in Bangkok. I might be travelling alone or with a friend. Any tips on how to make the most of my trip? And can you recommend any cheap hotels? Im planning to visit Singapore City, Universal Studios, Penang Malaysia, KL and Saba, then Bangkok. Should I get a tour guide on every city? Any advice is appreciated.

You don't need a tour guide unless of course you speak a certain language that is not widely spoken here.

If you intend to spend only 3 days here and have specific tourist spot to go then it's all right otherwise, it is a bit tight. Universal would have taken up a day and the other 2 days??? Well.....it is really up to you.

As for Malaysia, 4 days is even shorter. Traveling from West to East Malaysia would have already take a day by flight. From KL to Penang takes nearly a day or half a day if you depart early in the morning. Bus ride about 5 hours. Flight time about the same because of the distance to the airport in KL.

Bangkok is a great place to visit, you will definitely enjoy yourself. Indulge in the food and shopping which is supposedly cheap and good. However, like everywhere else, beware of cheats and pickpocket.

Perhaps you want to stop by Singapore first then decide whether to proceed to Malaysia and Bangkok.

You can always do a day trip to Johor and return to Singapore and go to Bangkok.

For somewhere cheap to stay in Singapore I would recommend Hangout @ Mt Emily, convenient location between Orchard and Little India:
Plenty of other cheap options on :
