I want to go to Canada next year to study, I would like to know if someone could tell me about the Cegep of Quebec. I didin’t apply yet. Could any one tell me if the cegep use a difficult program and what are the dificulties that I could face. Je sais qu’ils enseignent en français. It’s the first time that I will go to Canada, could you suggest me some other college in Montreal or Saint Hyacinthe thank you so much.

Answers

Dear Maria,

(I assume you are talking about the cegep system of the province of Quebec and not a specific one of the Quebec city..)

Cegep could be more difficult than high school mainly for two reasons. First, the subjects are more advanced and in depth than in High school. Then, cegep is built around autonomy, hence, you are the master of your schedule and time. Sometimes, this second reason is the one that causes the more problems to our beloved cégépiens because no one will remind you of this paper due or will push you to actually work. So, people you are not used and/or prepared to that kind of independence can have a tougher time with more in-depth subjects.

But, there is no reason to be afraid: taken one at the time, the steps are not so steep. Someone organized and serious will go through it like if it's nothing.

Oh, and there is also a standard french test which causes trouble to some people for some reason... Really it's nothing (if you attended to all your french class of course)!

Montréal has a ton of cegep (you should look by the program you want):
Vieux-Montréal
Ahunstic
Bois-de-boulogne
Maisonneuve
Rosemont
St-Laurent
Marie-Victorin

St-Hyacinthe has just one (cégep de St-Hyacinth)
You can also go to Collège Édouard-Montpetit (in Longueuil) if the South shore interests you.

Cheers
Philip
