Question

Shopping in Cape Town?

Can you please tell me where I can shop in Cape Town to get cheap items and great value for my money? Are the shopping centers in Cape Town more expensive than those in Johannesburg especially during the holidays? Would it be a better idea if I just go shop in Johannesburg instead?

Location

City: Cape Town

Province: Western Cape

Country: South Africa

Answers

The best value for money shopping will be done at the so-called factory shops. There is a "shopping area" know as access park in Kenilworth, where a lot of factories have these type of outlets. If you are shopping for clothing, I would go to areas like Maitland and Salt River, where you will find many factories, with shops attached.

Cape Town is more expensive during the holiday season and most other times as well. I would not say that the prices are increased during the holiday season - It is just generally more expensive.

Good Day. It depends on what you are actually shopping for. I am a Johannesburger, however I lived in Cape Town for some time. I agree with the "localyte" below, who recommends the Factory Shops.
Access Park is a large area of factory shops located in Kenilworth. There is a large variety of shops and in there really are some excellent prices to be found. Some of the more well known shops on offer:
* Levis
* Cape Union Mart
* New Balance
* Several baby stores
* Reebok, Nike and Addidas
* Several shoe stores
* Mr Price
* Several luggage shops
Look it up at: website
Alternatively, refer to the web site : website for an extensive list of malls, shops, etc.
Once again, it depends on the merchandise, but I find the prices of most items in Cape Town are on a par to the prices of those items in Johannesburg......so Happy Shopping !!

Cape Town is the most expensive city in South Africa (we pay for the mountain ;-)). There is however a book available called: The A-Z of Factory shops - a very valuable book indeed - it lists all the factory outlets available in the greater Cape Town area.

There are very cheap places to shop in Cape Town. Factory shops are a great source and A-Z of Factory shops by Pam Black is very useful. I have taken people to Access Park in Kenilworth and also Woodstock and Salt River have very good value. Otherwise Canal Walk, Somerset Mall and Tygervalley have excellent shops. I don't believe that shopping centres in Cape Town are more expensive than Joburg.

To be included in my previous answer. Sable Square, near Canal Walk, is a new factory shopping center and has excellent prices on brand names.
